01Overview
The E46 rear driveline and suspension are very close to the E36’s — and it inherited one of the E36’s problems with them: the rear subframe mounting points can rip out of the sheet metal.
Turner explain the mechanism. The rear differential feeds the torsional load from the engine through the subframe and into the chassis. That constant loading and unloading fatigues the sheet metal until it separates from the chassis.
BMW’s own answer was a cross member on the front two mounting points, which puts the bushing and the stud in double shear and takes the twist out of them. It works — but it moves the load to the left rear of the subframe, and that is where Turner have seen the failures, on low-mileage street cars as well as race cars. BMW also injected foam into the space between the underside of the chassis and the top of the trunk; that does nothing about the spot welds letting go, and it makes later repair work harder — almost impossible to weld against.
This kit thickens the metal and spreads the load over a larger area at those mounting points. Turner rate it as the version that has proven itself repeatedly and is the easiest to work with.

Repair or prevention — both
Turner position it two ways: it saves time when you are already repairing the chassis, and it is strongly recommended as preventative maintenance on a car that has not cracked yet.
This is a fabrication job
The kit reinforces the sheet metal at the mounting points, so it goes in with the rear subframe out and a welder on hand. Turner publish installation instructions for it — ask us and we will send you the link.
If the car already has the foam
BMW filled the cavity above the trunk floor with foam on some cars. It does not stop the spot welds failing, and it has to come out before anything can be welded — budget time for it.
